Heavy precipitation (rainfall) and the torrential rains of starting from May and continuing until June 2024 triggered floods, landslides and mudflows in many of the country’s cities and districts. The affected areas included Dushanbe, Khatlon province, RRS, Rasht, Nurobod and Sangvor districts.
The disaster has affected houses, roads, bridges, schools, agricultural land, irrigation canals, livestock, power transmission lines, drinking water supply and sewage lines, water pumping stations, vehicles, and other infrastructure.
The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan activated the Inter-Agency Commission on Emergency Situations in each disaster-affected district, which fully facilitated the response operations. Furthermore, Emergency Operations Centers have been set up in each disaster-affected district to collect and analyze relevant information, as well as to coordinate the response activities.
The RCST, supported by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society, provided relief assistance to 120 families (600 people) through household items to cover basic needs.
Based on the assessment in the field, on October 16-18, 2024 the affected families in Rasht Valley have been provided with household items to cover their basic needs, mattresses, pillows, bed linen sets, blankets, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, etc.
Under this operation, RCST covered families, whose houses are heavily damaged and who have lost their property and belongings, the most vulnerable families with many children or with elderly and families headed by women as the only breadwinners.
All response activities including delivery of goods, transportation to affected areas and distribution taking into account the needs assessment were conducted in close cooperation with the CoES representatives and local authorities of disaster affected areas.
Assisting the most vulnerable population is the main priority of the RCST and RCST efforts focus on supporting affected people on daily basis taking into account their assessed needs.
It should be noted that Kuwait Red Crescent Society is considered one of the reliable partners of the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan, its cooperation began in 2017, and every year, through the RCST, different humanitarian projects implement to support the vulnerable people of the country.
